THE STORY OF DEBBIE

Debbie Mitchell was a vibrant and beautiful woman when she was diagnosed with throat cancer at the age of 33. After her initial surgery and chemo therapy, we learned that 28 additional tumors were found in her body. She stopped all treatments.

During the remaining three months of her life, Debbie chose to LIVE. She could not speak, was frail, in pain and in a wheel chair yet made the most of everyday. She had her father take her to the park to feed the ducks and to the mall, the fair and the ice cream pallor. She was delighted when her Mom would make her favorite pancakes and her Dad, his famous chili. She would have a friend carry her into the ocean so she could feel the salt water on her skin. She designed her wedding dress. Debbie would describe her activities to me daily with the glee of a young child.

Debbie and I spent hours Texting and on Instant Messenger every single day for those three months and she never complained, not once. Yes, she had moments of panic and I would comfort her and we discussed the things in her life she needed to make peace with. We did shed some tears together. But mostly she wanted to talk about life; the lives’ of her friends and her loved one’s. Even in excruciating pain and near the end, she was delighted she would get to have her beautiful hair and strong body back in the afterlife. She found something to be joyful about every single day.

She bought a teddy bear to represent all of her friends (and then some). She had well over 30 bears in her collection. They became her babies. She would have grand tea parties with them daily. I was honored that Alice Bear always got to sit at the head of the table.

I have never seen such courage and caring for others “under fire”. I am, and always will be, in awe of the strength and grace I witnessed.

Debbie’s last text to me only minutes before she died (2/28/2009) read, “I love you, Alice. Promise me you won’t be sad.”

She was a true hero.
